The Mental Health care you deserve.

Indigo Counseling is led by Jen Garcia, LMHC.
Jen moved to Boston in 2005 for graduate school and never looked back.
In her own words:

“I fell in love with the city of Boston and with New England. My attendance and graduation from Northeastern University brought me here but the community I found kept me here. In 2007, with my Masters of Science in Counseling Psychology, I began my professional career.

While attending school, I interned at a rape crisis and domestic violence center where I was trained as a rape crisis counselor, worked a 24 hour hotline and facilitated individual and group therapy.

After graduation as I gathered experience towards independent licensure I worked with various non-profits and community mental health organizations. This included work as a clinician in juvenile detention; as a school based clinician with The Boston Institute for Psychotherapy and The Home For Little Wanderers, organizations that partner with Boston public schools to provide social-emotional supports in the school building; and as a therapist at Boston Youth Sanctuary, a therapeutic after school program for youth effected by trauma.
Additionally, I provided services at The Home for Little Wanderer’s outpatient clinic where I largely worked with young adults.
As I continued to gain experience in the field, I became a clinical supervisor for masters level interns from Boston College as well as post-masters clinicians at The Home for Little Wanderers.

All of these sites had one thing in common: individuals experiencing the effects of trauma, including depression, anxiety and self harm. Trauma, and its accompanying complexities, is the focus of my work. I am particularly versed with adolescents and young adults and hold significant experience with sexual assault, sexual abuse, physical and verbal abuse, traumatic grief and women’s issues.

Marriage and family brought me to the North Shore of Boston where I was delightfully surprised to once again fall for a city. Here in Salem, MA we found a unique landscape, history and people. In January of 2019 I embarked on a new endeavor: private practice. Only a year later the world changed as a global pandemic changed our landscape and mental health treatment became even more sought after. Thus was born, Indigo Counseling and Psychotherapy LLC in 2022.”

Our approach

Human beings are valuable - no matter where they come from, despite what they have or have not done and regardless of how they view themselves. A persons worth is not wrapped up in their history, culture, race or gender (though those are important), but rather an intrinsic worth given to each of us through the act of existing.

We only get one life: no re-dos, no re-ups. Now is the time for you to walk into the healing and freedom you so desperately seek but are afraid to reach for. Maybe it's the past pains and hurts, abuses and traumas that continue to affect you today. Maybe it's the weight of depression or anxiety. Whatever it is- today.is.the.day. To that end, there are many therapeutic modalities I work within. It is not the modality so much that matters but the match between client and clinician. I may be the “expert” in psychology but you are the expert in your life and we need each other to make the counseling process a success. Are you ready to reclaim worth?

Your First Visit

The first time we meet we will spend time getting to know each other. I will share with you a little bit about my experience, my therapy approach and my personal style. Ideally, you will also share with me what you are hoping to receive from therapy. We will discuss your current concerns as well as pertinent history.

We will review confidentiality and it’s limits, HIPAA requirements and complete any forms or permissions needed. We will discuss payment and insurance coverage and make a tentative plan for ongoing sessions.

If you are a parent or caregiver seeking therapy for your adolescent, we may meet privately first (without your child) or we may meet as a family unit, depending on preference and situation.

Individual Therapy

You and I work together in my private office or via telehealth to address your mental health needs. This may be a consistent weekly appointment or you may choose to meet as needed.

There are many therapeutic modalities I work within – cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, psychoanalysis, trauma informed work, motivational interviewing, arts and expressive therapies and more.

It is not the modality so much that matters to me but the match between client and clinician, modality and personality. I may be the “expert” in psychology but you are the expert on your life and we need each other to make the counseling process a success.
